BOOK REVIEW
The Struggle and the Promise: Restoring India’s Potential – Naushad Forbes
Ordinarily, I do not do book reviews. But this book struck a note with me. Anyone concerned with economic and social development in emerging nations should find this book of considerable interest. Many of the same problems – unemployment, the heavy hand of the state, internal diversity of opinion, poverty, the temptations of protectionism and excessive nationalism, the role of the country in global supply chains – afflict most developing countries. As an emerging nation, India is a particularly relevant example with one of the world’s fastest growth rates in recent years. I include in this post some of my own experiences and views that echo those of the book’s author.
